E.R. Thorpe was raised on the blues in the place where folk music, full of rage and fragile beauty, goes back to the source.

Her sound is evocative, sometimes wilfully naïve, sometimes considered and ultra-precise, often strange, always hypnotic.

With a ragged edge that has more in common with Nick Cave, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and William Blake than the obvious comparisons, she muses on nature and religion, God and the devil, good and evil, revealing both the beauty and devastation of life. These are songs born of deep tradition, but alive in the present day, revealing and fragile, executed spare and sharp.

As a frequent collaborator, she’s the voice that haunts and caresses many Torn Sail tracks, a silver lining to Mark Lanegan’s heart-breaking cloud on “Ricochets” from the “The Short Sweet Life” album.

Alongside Torn Sail’s Huw Costin and Matt Hill, she makes up The Low Drift, a folk group travelling beyond the ‘Keep Out’ signs, to the ancient green lanes and sunken tracks where their ancestors’ buried bones lie undiscovered.

Most recently, her new EP (exclusive pre-release first-pressing on sale at the Second Happening) drives the raw, hypnotic, sun-bleached blues and folk into hook-laden, pop-adjacent territory.

    Reviews:

"It's absolutely beautiful. A rare gem of a record. Go out and seek it. You won't be disappointed." (Murray Scott, 1BTN)

"I thought this was just wonderful. Go out and buy it, beautiful stuff." (Paul Hillery, Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours)

"A companion piece to the most important LP of the century This Short Sweet Life is Christmas come early.

I create a lot of conundrums in my head but by far the longest unsolved one is why so many folk are really popular when Huw and Emma create such transfixing music and only press up vinyl copies in the low hundreds. It's really annoying that being so into their important music is seen as an elitist deeper listening past-time. It shouldn't be.
Despite its lovely sleeve both feeling and looking incredible (hats off Joakim Boren) it is truly upstaged by the wonderful music. The whole EP is top drawer but this track is totally addictive. Huw's harmony is the perfect counterbalance for Emma's candy floss delivery. A delivery that truly disarms the listener with its subliminal imagery. I'm reminded of Tanya Donelly's sugary, unsettling, and distinctive contributions to The Throwing Muses.
Popular music in the blues/folk tradition can so often sound a bit sterile but thank-fully that same sonic fizz that sets Torn Sail apart sets this apart.
Its evocative sensory effects transport me back to my teary grandparents front room where together in nightly prayer they reminisced about two young guys blown-up in a tank. A simple expression for something so un-fathomably complex
That has great depth and poignancy. Just like this cantering, dizzying, gem of a tune."

about

"Managing to sound both old-timey and contemporary is a formidable thing to achieve and Emma does it with great ease. Blending stark and abstract imagery with a voice that can caress or unsettle, allied with the perfectly understated way that she plays her guitar makes her the real deal in my eyes. Apprehension never sounded so seductive." 9/10.

about

E.R Thorpe Retford, UK

E.R Thorpe from Nottinghamshire has shaped her own evocative sound, delivering pin drop performances. Sometimes wilfully naive, sometimes considered and precise - her choice of chords is particular and unusual and her finger picking weaves a strange atmosphere – the likes of which you’d more likely find in a Lynch film or a novel by Bolano than in the sculpted folk of her inspirations. ... more
